3D_Miko is one of the anonymous virtual cam females who emerged throughout the epidemic. Projekt Melody, an anime-styled adult streamer, is regarded as one of the format's pioneers, gaining around 20,000 followers in her first three days of broadcasting on Chaturbate in February 2020 (three years later, she has over 600,000 on Twitter alone). 

3D_Miko began broadcasting in April 2020, after unexpectedly finding herself with a lot of spare time. Initially, she was conducting voice-only broadcasts of NSFW visual novels on a now-defunct adult-friendly site, but once she discovered virtual camming, she was hooked.

Her avatar was created using VRoid, a 3D modelling software, and has been updated throughout the years to include skin texture and various clothing. When she's livestreaming, she utilizes VSeeFace, a webcam-tracking program that allows her avatar to mimic her actual head and face motions. Then, like other cam ladies, she utilizes a Lovense bluetooth sex toy, namely the Domi 2, which vibrates during livestreams when viewers tip her. Those groans, though, are her own. 3D_Miko is content for the time being, but she plans to improve in the future.

Other virtual cam girls have gone all out. Lola_XX, with her wide-rimmed spectacles, gothic look, and distinctive purple hair, also debuted in 2020 and is powered by ViRo, a virtual adult social network. Her setup comprises motion trackers all over her body, which are detected by 12 infrared cameras positioned throughout her IRL streaming room. She can even stick her tongue out and dance on a real-life stripper pole in her play area. Viewers may also remotely operate Lola_XX's Lovense, which she likes to use with the insertable Lush and Ferri panty vibrator.

However, for both 3D_Miko and Lola_XX, the benefits surpass any potential drawback. In addition to complete freedom of speech online, the flexible, anonymous employment allows them independence in their personal life. Lola_XX, for example, is preparing to become a licensed sex instructor.

"There's certainly some downsides to anonymity online, but it can also mean that people get to discover parts of themselves that they may never have otherwise," 3D_Miko says.
